Canadians were scrambling Saturday to discover the fate of their relatives and friends after a deadly earthquake rocked the country in the early morning, killing more than 100 people, and setting off a tsunami that could affect British Columbia’s coast.
“It’s a lot of collapsed buildings, lot of bridges, most of them fairly new and they all just came down like paper,” said Jose Astorga, president of the Winnipeg Chilean Association, whose members have been able to contact some family in Chile, but have not been able to account for all their relatives.
Canadian officials were also trying Saturday to establish communications with Canadians who may be in the affected zone.
“Canadian officials in Santiago and Ottawa are currently assessing the situation to clarify the extent of the damage as well as to determine the potential impact on Canadians who are currently in Chile,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a written statement.
The Chilean government declared a state of catastrophe following the massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake.
There are about 1,100 Canadians registered as being in Chile, said Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon. But the earthquake has devastated phone services in the South American country, he said.

Inverted nipples (also referred to as invaginated nipples) are a commonly observed phenomenon. In the instance that that someone has inverted nipples, the name itself suggests what is going on. Rather than the normal or usually position of the nipple in which it is faced away from the mammary glands, the nipples are usually “pouched” in the breast. That does not mean that inverted nipples are an abnormality. It is simply a state of the body.
And it does not have to be gender restricted since inverted nipples are seen both with men and women. When the body is stimulated – sexual arousing, fatigue or sweating – the inverted nipples may be seen to be perky and pointed. But that is a short lived state since the nipples pull back inside the breast once the stimulus is gone.

Jed Waits was the man believed to have shot and killed Tacoma, Washington special education teacher Jennifer Paulson this morning at the elementary school where she taught. He had allegedly been stalking the 30-year-old for years. He was also shot and killed today by authorities who confronted him after Paulson’s death.
Paulson and Waits apparently got into a confrontation in the parking lot, and he shot her multiple times with a semi-automatic pistol. She died before receiving medical attention. Waits was “dangerously infatuated” with Paulson, according to her father.
Police found Waits after the shooting today, and shot and killed him outside a daycare after he opened fire on authorities after he was stopped, according to the Baltimore Sun.
The two were apparently old acquaintances, but were never romantic. He reportedly had been stalking her since they met while working at Pacific University together years ago. He had allegedly followed her after she left school last week, and had just obtained a restraining order against him.
He was arrested and booked on charges of violating a 2008 anti-harassment order but was released on bail Tuesday, just days before the shooting.
